Peaky Blinders the movie: plot
The official Netflix synopsis reads, āBirmingham, 1940. Amidst the chaos of WWII, Tommy Shelby is driven back from a self-imposed exile to face his most destructive reckoning yet.
āWith the future of the family and the country at stake, Tommy must face his own demons, and choose whether to confront his legacy, or burn it to the ground. By order of the Peaky Blindersā¦ā
Knight previously told Deadline: āThe thing is that when Iām writing anything, but particularly Peaky, I tend to not have a plan except something very, very broad.ā
So for the film, itās actually set in World War II which I think I probably wouldnāt have done for series 7; Iād have probably taken it up to the war but because itās a movie then I think we need a sort of gear change.ā
Knight reiterated this again in September 2024, and when filming began, he told Netflix: āIām thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.ā

Netflix got hold of Peaky Blindersā rights and streamed it in the US, and just before the final series aired on the BBC, Knight first mentioned the idea of a PB film in January 2021 to Variety:
ā[The film is] in development. Itās a fully formed idea and it has a beginning, middle and end. And I think itās going to be a fitting conclusion to the story told so far, but from it, there will be things I donāt really call spinoffs, but there will be other TV shows that I hope will come out of [it], that will continue to tell the story of this part of society and this family.ā
The film was confirmed in June 2024, with Knight telling Deadline that the film would ābe an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.ā Murphy added: āIt seems like Tommy Shelby wasnāt finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.ā
Filming began in September 2024 and it all started rolling in Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham, and in St Helens, around the Pilkington Watson Street works. It was a relatively quick shoot for a film, as it was all wrapped by December 13, giving everyone a nice long Christmas break, presumably.
The Peaky Blinders-verse: future
Now that production has come to an end on theĀ new Netflix movie, Knight told BBC Breakfast: āWeāre putting it together now. I would say this, wouldnāt I? But itās fantastic. Weāve got, I think, the best British actors all in one place, including Stephen [Graham].ā
He also added that the movie will prove to be āa very fitting way to end this part of theĀ PeakyĀ story,ā which sparked questions from the presenters if there will be any future projects. Well, thereās a glimmer of hope as Knight reassured fans that theĀ Peaky BlindersĀ story isnāt over. He teased: āItās not over, letās just put it like that. Iām not allowed to announce it⦠but Iām just saying that the world ofĀ PeakyĀ will continue.ā
Speaking with Esquire in 2022, Knight hinted that someone was planning to āpop outā in the film, which could then take the story elsewhere, in another film or even format: āThe film, I know exactly what itās about. And I know what two stories itās going to tell. How the story will unfold, I donāt know. What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out ā I think I know who itās going to be.ā
And he confirmed that the film wonāt be the end of PB in an interview with Times Radio in December 2024. He said: āWell, itās interesting you should ask that question because the film is coming out and that wonāt be the end. It wonāt be the end, let me put it that way. Iām not saying none of it.ā Watch this space!
