“The Batman: Part II” will soon resume production with Steven Soderbergh stepping in to finish principal photography while director Matt Reeves continues to attend to a family matter, IndieWire has confirmed.

Production on the Batman sequel at DC starring Robert Pattinson has been delayed for a little over a week as a result of Reeves’ absence.

“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on ‘The Batman Part 2.’ Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film,” the studio said in a statement to IndieWire.

Soderbergh himself also added a statement: “I thought Matt Reeves’ work on ‘The Batman’ was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”

“The Batman: Part II” is dated for release on February 18, 2028, and that date as of yet has not shifted amid the delay. There will be a six-year gap between the original “The Batman” with Pattinson and the sequel after the original grossed $772 million worldwide.

The new film sees Pattinson reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, alongside Colin Farrell returning as The Penguin and Andy Serkis returning as Alfred, and newcomers Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch. There’s rumors that Stan is playing Harvey Dent, a.k.a. Two Face, but that’s unclear. The only thing he had to say about the film to our Anne Thompson is that the film is “in a very deep, deep winter.”

Soderbergh is a fascinating name to work in a fill-in capacity, let alone on a tentpole superhero film. He obviously has history with Warner Bros. on the Ocean’s movies and with HBO and HBO Max on films like “No Sudden Move.” He is one of the quickest, most prolific directors working today, but this would represent his biggest film in a while and his only studio film since 2023’s “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.” And though he’s long been based in New York, he’s now based in London where “The Batman: Part II” is shooting.

His last narrative film was this year’s “The Christophers” from Neon, and he also directed a documentary, “John Lennon: The Last Interview,” that premiered at Cannes but is currently without distribution.
