Thirty years after the release of Clueless, Alicia Silverstone is gearing up to reprise her iconic role, Cher Horowitz.

The 48-year-old actress gave an update about the upcoming sequel series to the 1995 coming-of-age comedy during an appearance on Today.

When asked what she could share about the Peacock series, she teased, “Not much,” before adding, “I’m really excited about it. I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher.”

“So we want to honor that, but also bring something fresh and new to it,” she shared. “I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now.”

Clueless hit theaters in 1995 and was loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s novel Emma. The cast also included Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, Brittany Murphy and Dan Hedaya. A short-lived sitcom starring Rachel Blanchard as Cher aired from 1996 to 1999.

Silverstone first announced in April that she would reprise her role for a sequel series, which is set to air on Peacock.

“Totally buggin’… in the best way 💁‍♀️✨,” Silverstone wrote on Instagram at the time, alongside a still and a GIF from Clueless and a screenshot of Variety’s report about the project.

Plot details for the series are unknown, but Variety reported that it is a follow-up to the movie. Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are writing with Jordan Weiss. Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the film, is involved as an executive producer, alongside Silverstone and producer Robert Lawrence.

The new project is completely separate from the 2020 attempt to reboot Clueless for Peacock. That project was set to center on Dionne Davenport, the character played by Dash in the movie, while Cher was missing.

At a screening and panel at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles in June in honor of the 30th anniversary of the film, Silverstone told PEOPLE she could reveal “nothing” about the TV sequel, Heckerling said she is “thrilled to death” about it.

When asked if she ever thought she’d revisit her character, Silverstone said, “I didn’t. And then I did it for the Super Bowl, yeah, and it was so much fun. We did it really at the Super Bowl.”

Silverstone previously returned to the role of Cher for Rakuten’s 2023 Super Bowl commercial. She also donned the yellow plaid skirt and jacket for Lip Sync Battle, performing to Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” with a set reminiscent of Cher’s bedroom in 2018.

Silverstone even recreated a scene alongside her son Bear in a hilarious 2021 TikTok clip.
