More than three decades after its initial release, one of Indian cinema’s most influential action dramas is gearing up for a return to theaters.

Star Nagarjuna and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma have revealed plans to re-release their groundbreaking 1989 film “Siva” in a technologically enhanced presentation that promises to introduce the cult classic to a new generation of moviegoers.

The crime drama, which drew from Varma’s own student experiences in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, delivered a gripping portrayal of students being exploited by anti-social elements. The film starred Nagarjuna alongside Amala and Raghuvaran, with music composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja.

The Annapurna Studios production, which redefined Indian action cinema of that era with its raw intensity and realistic sequences, will hit theaters in its original Telugu-language version first, with Hindi and Tamil versions to follow. The re-release coincides with Annapurna Studios’ 50th anniversary celebration, marking a full-circle moment for the production house that helped launch Varma’s directorial career.

“‘Siva’ was the film that gave me an iconic hero status, making my character truly unforgettable,” said Nagarjuna. “The fact that it remains one of the most talked-about films even after 36 years motivated my brother Venkat Akkineni and me to plan its re-release in the grandest way possible. We felt we owed it to the audience who made it such a cult classic, and also to a new generation who may have only seen it on YouTube.”

The re-release represents a significant technical undertaking, with the original mono soundtrack completely reimagined using advanced AI technology to create a Dolby Atmos experience. The film has also been restored in 4K resolution, promising enhanced visual clarity for contemporary audiences.

“Nagarjuna’s and the producers’ trust in me is what helped the film reach such great heights. It’s unbelievable that even today, people remember every scene and character. Annapurna Studios’ decision to re-release it has truly thrilled me. Although the original sound was highly appreciated, it was decided to redo it entirely to match today’s standards,” said Varma who debuted with the film. “By using advanced AI technology, we have converted the original mono mix to Dolby Atmos. People might have seen ‘Siva’ before, but I promise no one has experienced it the way they will now, with its new sound.”

Audiences will get their first glimpse of the restored version when the teaser debuts alongside Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated “Coolie,” which co-stars Nagarjuna, on Aug. 14, offering a preview of both the enhanced visuals and the new Dolby Atmos soundscape.

The original “Siva,” produced by Akkineni Venkat and Yarlagadda Surendra, achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, later being remade in Hindi in 1990 as “Shiva” with the same cast reprising their roles. The film earned recognition at the 13th International Film Festival of India, where it was featured in the Indian Panorama mainstream section, and won three Nandi Awards including best director for Varma, best first film of a director, and best dialogue writer for Tanikella Bharani.
