A false claim has been circulating widely on social media, alleging that the entire world would experience six minutes of darkness on August 2, 2025, due to a rare solar eclipse. The rumour suggests this “global blackout” is so extraordinary that it won’t happen again for a hundred years.
However, astronomy experts and NASA records confirm this is a complete hoax.
What NASA’s Data Actually Says
According to NASA’s official astronomical records, there is no total solar eclipse scheduled for August 2, 2025. The next eclipse of comparable magnitude is set for August 2, 2027, two years from now.
The 2027 event, sometimes called the “Eclipse of the Century,” is significant but will only create localised darkness in select regions. Specifically:
- The path of totality will cross parts of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
- No part of North America or large sections of Asia will see totality.
