Walmart Wants to Use AI to Make Shopping Easier

Walmart is going all in on its artificial intelligence (AI) agent strategy, consolidating dozens of specialized AI tools into four streamlined “super agents” to simplify the user experience for customers, employees, engineers, and suppliers. The retail giant shift marks a significant step in its ambitious AI integration efforts per a report from the Wall Street Journal, which aim to drive efficiency and personalization across its operations. AI Agents from Walmart AIs are not new as Cord Cutters News reproted by in May with the launch of Sparky to help your shopping.

The four super agents are tailored to distinct user groups: customers, employees, engineers, and sellers/suppliers. Each super agent integrates the capabilities of multiple behind-the-scenes AI tools into a single, unified interface. The customer-facing super agent, dubbed Sparky, is already live and will continue to expand its features, offering personalized shopping experiences to enhance customer engagement. Marty, the supplier-facing super agent, is slated for release in the coming months and will include functions like purchase analytics and automated advertising campaigns. The employee and engineering super agents are expected to roll out within the next year, with capabilities such as managing employee benefits or issuing replacement discount cards autonomously.

Walmart’s leadership sees AI as a transformative force. “Artificial intelligence is already changing how we work,” said Walmart CEO Doug McMillon. “Learning and applying what we learn, as we build new tools, is the responsibility and an opportunity for all of us to improve experiences for our customers, members, and associates.” John Furner, CEO of Walmart’s U.S. division, emphasized that staying ahead in AI adoption is critical in the fast-evolving retail sector, where top players can shift dramatically every decade. He noted that AI agents are expected to drive top-line growth through personalized customer experiences and bottom-line savings by optimizing supply chains and inventory management.

To bolster its AI push, Walmart announced the hiring of Daniel Danker, formerly of Instacart, as head of global AI acceleration, product, and design. Danker will report directly to McMillon. The company is also recruiting an AI platforms leader to work under Kumar, signaling a deepening commitment to AI innovation.

Walmart’s consolidation efforts leverage the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard introduced by Anthropic in November. MCP allows super agents to seamlessly connect with smaller agents, internal apps, and data sources. Kumar noted that while MCP wasn’t widely used when Walmart began building its agents, the company is now retrofitting older systems to align with the standard, ensuring a cohesive ecosystem.
