In pictures: Andy Warhol’s runway references30 Images
Andy Warhol is the most famous modern artist of all time. While that statement may ruffle a few feathers, Warhol’s arch domination of culture extended far beyond the art world, influencing writers, photographers, musicians and more to this day. Try as you might, you’ll have a very difficult time finding someone who hasn’t at least heard of the 60s savant.
Other than those disciplines, another huge creative art that felt the force of Warhol was the fashion world. The artist himself was known to be inspired by fashion, attending shows with Keith Haring, dining with Diana Vreeland and taking New York with Halston in tow. In turn, fashion has been endlessly influenced by Warhol’s work, and to celebrate the late legend’s would-be birthday, we’re looking back at all those moments of inspiration. American designer Stephen Sprouse had an affinity for Warhol’s work and referenced the artist multiple times. For his SS88 show, Sprouse gained permission from the Warhol estate to use the artist’s “Self-Portrait (1967)” as a screenprint across the collection.

Gianni Versace is known to have had an appreciation for Warhol’s work, so much so that he covered this SS91 Versace dress in the artist’s Marilyn Monroe portrait (along with James Dean, too). The dress is so iconic that it now sits in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Donatella even brought back the print for her SS18 Gianni tribute collection.

Though this isn’t a direct reference, Edie Sedgwick’s strong association with Warhol’s Factory means that it definitely counts. For SS05, John Galliano’s Dior couture collection imagined “Edie Sedgwick meets the Empress Josephine” – but the designer wasn’t done there. Galliano was so taken by Sedgwick that his next show, AW05 ready-to-wear, was also dedicated to her, decking models out in her famous sunglasses and stripes.

Not only did Moschino’s AW06 men’s show rebrand the famous Campbell’s can as Moschino soup, but then-creative director Rosella Jardini also whacked some specs and a white wig on the model for a full-on Warhol tribute.

For her AW09 collection, Blumarine founder Anna Molinari didn’t just put her models in leggings and minidresses covered in Warhol’s flower print – she took the artist’s most famous work, replaced Monroe’s face with her own, and blew it up ten feet high. Absolute diva behaviour.

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s loud and colourful oeuvre has long been indebted to Warhol’s pop sensibilities, and in 2009, the French designer sent a playful tribute down the runway at his AW09 show.

In September 2012, Mrs Prada was next up to be struck by the Warhol bug. For her SS13 collection, the Italian matriarch doused some fur coats, stoles and long-sleeve tops with the artist’s renowned flower print, originally created between 1964 and 1965.

For his AW13 Dior show, Raf Simons also opted to adorn his clothes with Warhol’s work. But rather than going for the ran through Marilyns and soup cans, Simons opted for the artist’s lesser-known early drawings from the 1950s.

Raf clearly has a thing for Warhol, revisiting the artist once again for his SS18 Calvin Klein 205W39NYC collection. Just like the early-era illustrations for Dior, Simons mined some less obvious Warhol references, like the ‘Death & Disaster’ series, a lithograph of the actor Dennis Hopper and a portrait of Sandra Brant, wife of publishing magnate and Interview magazine donor Peter Brant.

For SS24, Comme des Garçons diffusion line Shirt went all in on Warhol, partnering with The Andy Warhol Foundation for a catwalk show filled with his work. “Marilyn Diptych” from 1962, the portrait of Muhammad Ali from 1978 and the “Camouflage” series – Warhol’s last work before his death in 1987 – are all used in the collection.
