Roku has released a set of five updates to its operating system, enhancing experimentation, personalization, discovery, and practical utility across its streaming devices and smart TVs. These changes, which had been announced last month but are now coming out with the Roku OS 16 update this week, build on earlier Home Screen refinements and aim to make the platform more flexible for everyday viewing while supporting growth in key markets.
The most distinctive addition is Roku Labs, which gives users early access to experimental, in-development apps created by Roku’s engineers and innovators. Viewers can locate the Roku Labs app in the Streaming Store and add it to their Home Screen. At launch, the experimental offerings include Weather, Stocks, and a Find My Remote app available on eligible Roku devices. The program lets people try features that may eventually become permanent or may remain temporary tests, providing a direct channel for user exposure to ideas still under development. This approach differs from traditional beta programs by making the experimental apps openly discoverable rather than invitation-only.
At the same time, Roku is preparing the global expansion of its redesigned Home Screen. The flexible, personalized layout already available on Roku devices in the United States will reach Brazil and Mexico in the coming months. The rollout pairs the core design with region-specific elements such as localized content destinations and a tailored For You destination. The goal is to deliver a consistent yet locally relevant starting point for discovering content in those markets, extending the same framework that prioritizes user preferences and easier navigation.
(Note the subscription feature is not fully rolled out yet.) Subscription bundles receive a practical upgrade through Premium Subscription bundles, now offered in the United States and Mexico. Users can choose from more than 30 combinations drawing on services such as AMC+, FOX One, Hallmark+, Howdy, and STARZ. Each bundle provides savings of up to 30 percent relative to purchasing the same services individually. Subscribers can start a bundle directly on their Roku device or by using voice search for bundles, and they retain the ability to adjust their selections at any time either on the device or online. The feature sits within Roku’s broader Premium Subscriptions system, which already centralizes sign-ups and management for multiple services under a single account.
Search has been refined into a more personalized and dynamic experience. Results now include tailored explanations that indicate why a particular movie, show, or other title appears. The explanations draw on the individual’s viewing preferences, watch history, and broader trending content. By surfacing the reasoning behind recommendations, the update aims to make discovery more transparent and reduce the sense that suggestions arrive without context.
Roku Voice has also gained a non-entertainment capability. Users can ask about the weather and receive real-time information for their location, including temperature, humidity, precipitation, and wind. The feature continues the gradual expansion of the on-screen assistant beyond pure content search and playback controls, turning the remote into a modest information tool without requiring a separate app or external device.
These updates arrive as Roku maintains a leading position in connected TV, having surpassed 100 million streaming households worldwide and holding a substantial share of the U.S. TV operating system market according to industry tracking. The company’s platform revenue, driven by advertising and subscriptions, has grown steadily alongside hardware distribution through both its own players and partner-branded Roku TVs. Features such as Labs invite broader participation in product development, while the subscription bundles and improved search support higher engagement and monetization within the existing ecosystem. The international Home Screen expansion extends the same personalization tools that U.S. users already receive, potentially strengthening retention in growing Latin American markets.
