A Chinese warship, which was chasing a Philippine patrol boat in the South China Sea, collided with its own coast guard on Monday, a video released by Philippine’s capital Manila showed. The footage captured the dramatic confrontation between the Chinese and Philippine vessel before Beijing’s warship collided with one of its own coast guard.

The incident took place near the disputed Scarborough Shoal as the Philippine coast guard officials were distributing aid to fishermen in the area, said Manila’s Commodore Jay Tarriela. He added that it was then the Chinese coast guard started performing a “risky manoeuvre” which inflicted “substantial damage” on the Chinese warship’s forward deck, BBC reported.

The Chinese side acknowledged that a confrontation took place and accused the Philippine of “forcibly intruding” into Chinese waters but skipped mentioning the collision of Beijing’s warship with one of its own coast guard vessels.

Videos released by Manila showed a Chinese coast guard ship and a giant vessel with number 164 on its hull colliding with each other amid a loud crash. An additional footage released by the Philippine Coast Guard showed the Chinese vessel still afloat in water but with its bow crumbled inwards due to impact of the crash.

The South China Sea has been at the hub of a territorial dispute between China, the Philippines and other countries. Tensions between Beijing and Manila have soared at multiple occasions with each side accusing the other of provocations and altercations at sea.

While posting the videos on X, Philippine Commodore Tarriela said “The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has consistently urged the Chinese government to respect the COLREGS and to approach these matters with professionalism, especially considering their role in enforcing maritime laws.”

The Chinese coast guard, however, said that it was acting in accordance with the law and that they took all necessary actions to send the Philippines vessel away from Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.
