Bring Modern Autofocus Performance to Your Classic Manual Cinema Lenses With This New AF Adapter

In the continuation of an overarching trend in the camera lens space, another new solution has been developed to help filmmakers and DPs bring modern technologies to help improve the workflows for working with their favorite classic cinema lenses.

Tilta has introduced its new Nucleus Autofocus Adapter, which aims to do pretty much just that, as it promises to bring modern autofocus performance to classic manual lenses as a way to help filmmakers get the character of vintage cinema glass, but avoid the limitations that usually come with these fully manual focus classic lenses.

Here’s what you need to know about how it works and what it will be able to offer for your cinematography choices.

So, the goal of this new Tilta Nucleus Autofocus Adapter is to bridge the gap between these two modern and classic technologies to combine the emotional look of these lenses with the speed and convenience of modern autofocus control.

Tilta’s new Nucleus Autofocus Adapter system is designed to use the camera’s native phase-detection autofocus to translate that data directly to external motors through this helpful Nucleus-M II Wireless Control System.

This new system is compatible with both the Nucleus-M II motor and the Nano II motor and will make use of a built-in lens library, which should further allow for fast and easy calibration—all while the adapter itself will be able to intercept AF data to drive the motor with accurate, responsive focus.

Here at launch, the Tilta Nucleus Autofocus Adapter is set to be available for Sony E-mount camera systems, as it will be compatible with Sony cameras up to the FX6. This is a win for traditional workflows, where the Nucleus-M II FIZ unit will be able to override autofocus to deliver a familiar 1st AC focus pulling experience.

After this first launch with Sony E-mount systems, Tilta reports that RF-mount support will be on the docket next, with additional lens mounts coming soon after that.

The Tilta Nucleus Auto Focus Adapter (E to PL) is available for preorder with 10% off from February 5th through April 6th, with shipping beginning after April 7th, and it is set to retail for $269 on the company’s website here.
