Philo Announces Price Increase for Grandfathered Legacy Customers Because Its Losing Money On These Plans

by akwaibomtalent@gmail.com

Philo, the affordable live TV streaming service known for its simplicity and customer-focused approach, has announced a significant change for its grandfathered legacy subscribers. In a heartfelt letter from CEO Andrew McCollum, the company revealed that it will be raising the price of its oldest subscription plans for the first time, effective October 8, 2025. The decision, driven by the need to build a sustainable business, marks the end of Philo’s long-standing commitment to never increasing prices for existing customers.

In the letter, McCollum addressed subscribers directly, emphasizing Philo’s core values of simplicity, affordability, and respect. “From the beginning, Philo set out to be a streaming service built around simplicity, affordability, and respect,” McCollum wrote. “We have worked hard to maintain that—having never raised prices on our existing subscribers, or forced them to upgrade.” However, he acknowledged that the company has been losing money on its oldest plans for some time, despite efforts to absorb those costs out of loyalty to its subscribers.

The price adjustment will see legacy plans increase to $25 per month, plus applicable taxes, starting October 8, 2025. To add value, Philo is including a one-year unlimited DVR feature with these plans, allowing subscribers to record and store their favorite shows for up to a year. For those who may consider canceling, McCollum highlighted that subscribers can still access over 110 free channels, a 30-day DVR, and a growing library of on-demand movies and shows through the Philo app at no cost.

“We hope you’ll continue to be a subscriber, but we understand that some of you may choose to cancel,” McCollum noted, expressing gratitude for the loyalty of Philo’s community. He directed subscribers to their account page or customer support—available 24/7 via phone, email, or live chat—for assistance with managing subscriptions or addressing concerns.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among Philo’s loyal customer base. While some appreciate the transparency and the addition of unlimited DVR, others expressed disappointment on social media, citing the loss of the low-cost plans that initially drew them to the service. Philo’s legacy plans, which offered a budget-friendly alternative to pricier streaming services, were a key selling point for cord-cutters seeking live TV without breaking the bank.

Philo’s decision reflects broader challenges in the streaming industry, where rising content costs and competition are pushing companies to adjust pricing models. Despite the change, Philo remains committed to its mission of delivering affordable entertainment. The company encourages subscribers to explore their options and reaffirms its gratitude for their role in Philo’s journey.
